Fall Home Maintenance

Get your home in peak condition for the winter by following a few of these home maintenance tips.

Look for signs of peeling or blistering paint. Besides being unattractive, it’s a sign that the exterior paint film is failing and can no longer protect the siding of the building, leading to wood rot.

Cleaning your gutters is one of the easiest things to do to protect your home from more costly repairs later. Gutters cleaning can be messy but worth it. After the leaves have fallen, clean out the gutters and downspouts, flush them with water, inspect the joints and tighten brackets if necessary.

Be sure to caulk around windows and doorframes to prevent heat from escaping. Look around where the windows meet the brick or wood siding of your home. Is it a tight connection? Caulking isn’t tough and can save on energy efficiency.

Make sure your roof is in good shape. A healthy roof is your homes best defense in protecting your home from the elements. Better to address any issues now that to discover a problem in a cold winter rain.

Fireplaces need to be serviced and maintained to continue to operate safely and efficiently. Have the status of your flue and damper examined by a chimney expert if you are looking forward to some cold weather fires.
